REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES

The second installment of taxes on the grand list of October 1, 2010 is due and payable on January 1, 2012 and may be paid through the month of January without penalty.  If the second installment is not paid on or before February 1, 2012, the installment will draw interest from January 1, 2012 (original date due) at the rate of 1.5% per month, subject to a minimum of $2.00 (CT Statute 12-146).  Supplemental Motor Vehicle Tax Bills, issued under State Statute 12-71B, are also due January 1, 2012, and payable during the month of January 2012.  Payment must be made on or before February 1, 2012 or the interest penalty shall be applied as listed above.  Your cancelled check is your receipt.  If paying by mail and a receipt is desired, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope along with the appropriate payment stub(s) with the payment.  Credit card and e-check payments can be made via their online tax system at www.Southbury-CT.Org/tax or by telephone at 1-877-309-4941.  The fee for credit card payments is approximately 2.85% and e-checks are $3.00.

Send the appropriate payment stub(s) located at the bottom of your bill with your payment.  Keep the top portion for your records.  You can receive an electronic reminder of your tax bills by registering for e-alert notifications on the homepage of the Town’s website www.southbury-CT.org.  Failure to receive a tax bill does not invalidate the tax or the penalty.  The Tax Office is located in Southbury Town Hall and is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., except holidays, to receive tax payments.  If accommodations are needed due to a disability, please call 262-0654.  Source:  Penny Cognato, Tax Collector, Town of Southbury/ Executive Offices

AMBULANCE NEWS

The HVAA had a busy month in November answering 65 calls. Sixteen calls were to destinations outside of the HVAA primary service area as mutual aid to Southbury Ambulance while Southbury or other ambulance services came into the Village fifteen times when HVAA was unavailable.

Day time dispatches numbered 47 and 18 were night calls.  Danbury Hospital was the destination for 30, Waterbury, 18; St. Mary's Hospital, four and one went to another hospital.  Twelve dispatches did not require transportation to a medical facility.  A paramedic took charge on 23 hospital trips.

A new volunteer driver has joined HVAA, Dan Callahan, a Village resident who will help make the ambulance service more efficient.  Source:  HVAA

JANUARY 2012 SAFETY TIP

Caution – There have been three cars broken into right in our own backyard.  One on Christmas Day in the parking lot of the United Church of Christ and the others at The Gym, both on Main Street South. The vehicles were broken into by smashing the glass on a side window, reaching in and taking valuables left on the seat.  Be sure to leave all items of value out of sight, and lock your vehicle!  Source:  Resident Safety Committee

REMINDER TO RESIDENTS

How to prevent cold weather pipe freeze-ups, related flooding conditions, and damages to personal property.

1. Set your thermostats to an acceptable setting - 65 degrees is recommended; however, if outside temperatures are frigid and in the single digits for an extended period, turn thermostats up accordingly.

2. In addition to providing adequate heat, it is important to keep all interior doors open (even rooms which are not used) including bathroom vanity door, kitchen base cabinet (where sink is located) open to permit room heat temperatures to get to plumbing service and drain lines.

3. Unfortunately, a large majority of Heritage Village units were constructed with plumbing supply lines on the outside walls and in attics contrary to proper construction susceptible to outside freezing temperatures; therefore, it is up to unit owners to provide more than adequate supply of heat.

4. An outside garden hose that has not been removed further increases the freeze-up/flooding potentials. Source:  Resident Service Center
